Homecoming Recap

OK, I'm finally done with my exams.  Didn't do great, but I survived them.  And I have a little time to post.

I still haven't said anything about GU Homecoming two weekends ago.  It was great to see everybody again.  On Thursday night, we went to dinner at Hard Times Cafe with Mark, Darrell, Jen, Steve, Cory, Vernon, Dave Liu and Annie.  Great to get a meal there again; the chili there is just ridiculously good.  Afterwards, we went back to Dave Liu's for a bit for some beer pong and chilling before I left to meet up Ohn to head over to Club Glow for DJ Tiesto.  The line was crazy long; it stretched from the front of the building and wrapped around the side of the building, and didn't seem to be moving at all.  Ohn and I were pissed, because we had bought our tickets online, and it said specifically online that if you bought your tickets on their website, you wouldn't have to wait in line.  While on line, club officials were offering admittance to a shorter line for an additional $40, we thought paying extra to go wait in another line was pointless (especially if other people did it too), and stayed in the line we were in.  Turned out to be the right call; we were in the club within a half hour.  Tiesto was flat out AMAZING.  It was just such an incredible experience, and we were truly in the presence of greatness that night.  Definitely the best time I've ever had at a club; everyone was dancing and having fun and there wasn't any of the drama that I usually get into or observe at clubs.  Ohn and I ended up staying till around 4am, and Tiesto was definitely spinning till sunrise.  We were just way too tired to stay.

On Friday, we celebrated Cory's birthday.  First, we hit up some house parties in Georgetown (one featured Dave Salvo's band playing on 33rd, the other was a rager thrown by one of Courtney's friends on 35th).  I caught up with Waytz, Salvo, and Jeff Brown at 33rd, and chatted for a bit with Courtney at her friend's party.  Great to see some familiar faces.  Afterwards, we headed over to Continental, a pool hall in Rosslyn, where we met up with Jen, Jim, Rimm, and a bunch of Vernon's SMP friends.  The night was highlighted by some Asian chick who was playing pool at the table next to ours.  She flipped out when one of Vernon's SMP friends accidentally backed into her and messed up her shot.  She had this real bitchy look about her, and when it happened, she essentially went up to her boyfriend (who was like 6'4 and pretty big) and gave him a "are you gonna do something about this?" look.  He replied with a "there are 8 of them and 1 of me, what the hell do you want me to do" look, and she was pissed.  Later on, it escalated into a shouting match between Vern's friend and the girl, and it was a sight to behold: this huge white guy trying to shove his little Asian girlfriend into his car so they can go home, and during the process, these 2-3 drunk guys are just goading her on and calling her a stupid bitch and trying to fight her.  Hilarious.

I hope this upcoming weekend is as good as homecoming weekend was. Hoya Saxa.

23rd Birthday

My 21st and 22nd birthday celebrations were a little too low-key, for my taste.  Big ups to Joe Zullo for taking me out on my 21st when no one else could or would (I'll never forget it), and the RDP family for a great night at Maggiano's (still the best non home-made Italian food I've ever had).

But my 23rd, I mean "good freakin' lord."

Just on a quick note to get it out of the way: Brian and Jai brought Geno's AND Pat's cheesesteaks to my place so we could finally determine once and for all which place was better.  Here's my honest opinion: the Geno's steak is better, but the Pat's cheese is better.  Not trying to be diplomatic or anything, but that's the truth.  Anyways, if you want a good cheesesteak, go to Nick's cart on North 15th and Race.  $3.50, and a cheesesteak so big you have to eat around it just to pick it up.  And it's better too.

Most of the guys from home came down from NJ.  We had a pretty strong contingent from DC with half of RDP, Jen, and Jim.  And I was able to convince the girl at the entrance of the VIP room to let my friends in even though they weren't Drexel students.  She finally gave in, but reminded them that they had to pay for drinks, since they weren't given an open bar bracelet.

Too bad she forgot that the bartenders would be too busy to CHECK for bracelets.  Bwahahaha.

Long story short, everyone got all sorts of wasted, I was ordering 8 beers at a time, and it was an awesome night (the pics are on Facebook, I'm too lazy to post them here, but if there's enough interest, I will).  We were in the VIP Room of McFadden's ("The Blue Room"), but there was just too much reggae and spanish music for my liking, so as soon as the open bar ended, we went upstairs, where they were pulling out the Hits of the 80's like it was their job.  The last thing I remember was doing some shots of jack and then chugging a rum and coke and listening to "You're the Best Around," possibly the greatest song ever (featured in "The Karate Kid," one of the greatest movies ever).

And then, I woke up in my bed.

Here's what allegedly happened in between.  Alex threw up on Kim's shoes in the middle of the dance floor (I can't believe I missed that).  I almost got kicked out of the bar by the bouncer.  The DC guys went to South Street to go get Jim's Cheesesteaks.   I propositioned Kim to Brendan over the phone (my bad, Eric), The Rockaway guys ran the Rocky steps at the Art Museum. I tried to hold a tree up I perceived to be falling.  I threw up on Jen's shoes.  Doug threw up blood on my carpet.  I threw up out my window.  It's a good bet Eric puked at some point.  And the rest, you'll have to ask someone who remembers.

I woke up the next morning unable to keep from falling for more than 10 seconds without laying down. Until 9pm.  Brunch at Colleen's definitely helped, but I'm definitely past my drinking prime.  But it was fun to revisit the limits, at least just for a night.  Thanks, guys.  It's a night I'll remember fondly.

I Reflect

So I've had some time in between massive studying this week to think about what's happened recently, and there's a few things that I'd just like to put in writing, so maybe I'll either feel better about myself or stop thinking about it.  One way or the other.

It's been brought to my attention that I acted like a real jerk on my birthday towards some people, and did some really inappropriate things.  For that, I apologize.  In all honesty, I blacked out and I don't even remember what happened, what I did, and what I said.  If I offended you in any way, I'm really sorry.

It's also been brought to my attention that I got a homeboy back in RT who feels slighted because he apparently "wasn't given an invitation" to my birthday bash last weekend.  Here's my two cents: 1) I didn't call everybody who came; in fact, if only the people who I called came, there would have been three people here, and probably not the three people you'd think.  2) The invite (which was open to everyone) was on my AIM profile for a month, and in this blog for even longer; if you had bothered to check either, IM me, or call me any time within the past 4 weeks, you would have known, 3) if you had spoken with anyone at home (most of which took the initiative to find out what was going on), you would have known too, 4) saying that you found out too late to come is also a cop-out; two people who came called me the day of to see if they could come.  It's less than a two-hour drive.  Do the math.  Trying to put the blame on me is just ridiculous.

I really wish at some point I'll see some fruits to my labor.  All the effort I've put in the past 3-4 months (years, really) and I've yet to see any kind of result that would make me feel like "Wow, all the work I've been doing is paying off."  Going back to the well so many times and coming up dry kind of makes me wonder sometimes whether or not I have the talent or aptitude for this.  But one thing's for sure; I'm going to stick this out for as long as I can, and I'm not going to quit.  I've gone too far to turn my back on this now.  But like I said, I just wish for once I could be truly proud of something I've accomplished in academia.

Thanksgiving Break

I don't think anybody needed this break more than I did.  Having 5 stress-free days with no thoughts about work was exactly what I needed.

We drove down to North Carolina for Thanksgiving to spend it with family, and it was picture-perfect.  Got a chance to see Uncle Hua-Sou, and glad to see he is doing better than expected.  Thanksgiving dinner was sick; sure beats the Chef Boyardee and ramen that I've been living on as of late.  Watched "Crash" before Bert made it to NC, and it's easily one of the best movies I've ever seen.  Definitely recommended.

Spent two plus days in DC, and drove up with Linda, as she was staying with a friend of hers in Falls Church.  I stayed at Brendan's up on Columbia Pike (down the street from Cory and Vernon), and had a very chill couple of days just watching ball games and movies on TV.

Also was in attendance for the Georgetown-Vanderbilt game on Saturday afternoon.  Very disappointing ending, we dropped a game we should have won, and I have a bad feeling it might cost us later in the season when it's time to start picking tourney teams.

Want to keep this post short, so I'll leave out most of the other details for the sake of brevity and the fact that I'll be extremely busy until X-mas break.  Which can't come soon enough.
